Truist Championship announces Ron Green Scholarship Fund
Annual scholarship in honor of Ron Green, Sr. and Ron Green, Jr. to benefit a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill journalism and media student
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In memory of Ron Green, Sr., and in honor of Ron Green, Jr., the Truist Championship today announced an annual $10,000 scholarship – the Ron Green Scholarship Fund – to be awarded to a deserving undergraduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who is currently enrolled in the Hussman School of Journalism and Media, with a demonstrated interest in sports communications. The announcement was made during a special tournament press conference on Tuesday afternoon inside the Ron Green Sr. Media Center.
“Our family is truly honored to be the namesake for this great scholarship fund. I have vivid memories of growing up playing golf with my dad, and later sitting next to him in media centers doing our best to bring this game to life with our words,” said Ron Green, Jr. "The University of North Carolina has been and continues to be an important part of our family, and this association is special in so many ways. This tournament, Quail Hollow Club and the Harris family have meant so much to Charlotte through the years and we are humbled to have the Green family name associated with that legacy in such a positive manner."
The first recipient of the Ron Green Scholarship Fund will be named for the 2026-27 academic year and recognized at the 2027 Truist Championship.
Ron Green, Sr., who passed away at the age of 95 in 2024, covered sports for the Charlotte News and Charlotte Observer for over 50 years. He covered 60 consecutive Masters Tournaments, 25 Super Bowls, 26 Final Fours, four Olympic Games, authored four books, and was a fixture in every press room throughout his historic career. He is a member of the North Carolina Journalism Hall of Fame, the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, the United States Basketball Writers Hall of Fame and the Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame, and is the namesake for the Ron Green, Sr. Media Center at the Truist Championship. In 2006, he received the PGA of America Lifetime Achievement in Journalism award, and in 2010, he was honored by Jack Nicklaus with the Memorial Tournament journalism award.
Ron Green, Jr., is the senior writer for Global Golf Post, covering the sport year-round for one of the game’s premier outlets. He spent much of his career at the Charlotte Observer covering
golf, college football and basketball, the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Hornets and NASCAR for 23 years before moving to Global Golf Post. He has covered more than 100 major championships over his esteemed career; served as president of the Golf Writers Association of America; and was named the 2023 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism, allowing the Greens to become the first father-son duo in history to earn the honor.
“On behalf of the Truist Championship, it’s an honor to announce the Ron Green Scholarship Fund as we recognize the incredible impact these two gentlemen have had on our game,” said Truist Championship Executive Director, Adam Sperling. “The Greens have long been synonymous with golf in Charlotte, but they have also been foundational to telling the stories of our athletes and events around the world and helping to encourage young media members looking to follow in their respective footsteps. Today’s announcement is a celebration of that great legacy, and we are excited to award this scholarship to a deserving UNC-Chapel Hill student for years to come.”
